"A Day in history": Repeat records in the game with Unicaja
The away game against Unicaja took place within the 5th round of the regular season of the European tournament. The advantage that the hosts held in the first and third quarters ultimately secured their victory with a final score of 93:86. However, this game still made its way into Zenit's history thanks to standout performances from guards Ryan Toolson and Stefan Markovic.
In the matchup against the Spanish team, Toolson was the top scorer on the court, racking up 35 points. Ryan repeated his own record for the most points scored in a EuroCup match for St Petersburg, which we recalled here. The American player hit 7 three-pointers, attempting a staggering total of 18 shots from beyond the arc. If at least one ball from those misses did go to the basket, the guard could update his accomplishment.
Stefan Markovic, meanwhile, followed in the footsteps of Zabian Dowdell from the previous season by dishing out 14 assists. Their joint record for assists in a game still stands to this day.
By the end of the 2016/17 season, Zenit reached the EuroCup quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Lokomotiv Kuban. The team from Krasnodar, in turn, lost to the same Unicaja in the next stage, with the Spanish side ultimately winning the tournament trophy in the final.
