"A Day in history": Austin Hollins' three-point shooting record
On September 26, 2020, Austin Hollins set the Zenit record for three-pointers made in a single game — 9 accurate shots. Let's go back in time and dive back into the atmosphere of that record.
Austin Hollins moved to St. Petersburg in the summer of 2019 and from the first games he started to show a high level of play on the court. The guard spent two full seasons in the team. In 103 games with Zenit, the player scored 1019 points and recorded 192 rebounds, 123 assists, 114 steals and 26 blocked shots. Hollins reached the Euroleague quarter-finals with Zenit and also won bronze in the VTB United League and Russian Championship.
On that day, the blue-whites played against Estonia's Kalev in the third round of the United League. The American basketball player was the hero of the game, hitting 9 of 13 shots from beyond the arc. Austin scored 27 points (all from downtown) and Zenit won 91:83. Hollins' performance is not only a Club’s record for three-pointers, but also his own.
In the following years, the player played for Serbian Crvena Zvezda, Israel's Maccabi, Lithuanian Zalgiris and now defends the colours of Greek AEK. Specially for the "A Day in History" project, Austin Hollins shared his emotions and memories of that momentous day.
First of all, I want to thank Zenit for recognizing me for this game and this accomplishment of hitting nine threes in a game. It's definitely an amazing feeling. And thinking back on the memories of that game, I don't have a ton of them because it was a while ago. But one thing I do remember is, you know, that I was put in a position to succeed. I had a great coach in Xavi who is one of the best in the world at putting players in a position to succeed and using their skill sets. And I had great teammates as well that that were able to find me when I was open. And fortunately, my only job was to was to knock down the shots. And in that night they were falling. So, again, I appreciate it. And I wish you guys all the best!
