"A Day in history": Kevin Pangos' assist record in the EuroLeague
In the latest entry of the "Day in history" project, we recall the assist record in EuroLeague games set by a Zenit player.
On December 8, 2020, Zenit had an away game against Spanish Valencia Basket. The match, which was part of the 3rd round of the regular EuroLeague season, had originally been scheduled earlier but was postponed due to a coronavirus quarantine in the St. Petersburg camp. After taking control of the second half with a "+19" advantage, Zenit secured a confident 72:85 victory on the road.
In this game, Zenit guard Kevin Pangos recorded a double-double and set a personal achievement. In addition to scoring 12 points, the Canadian player also registered 12 assists — setting a club record for assists in the EuroLeague for Zenit.
Over 65 games in the 2020/21 season — his only season with the St. Petersburg team — Pangos accumulated 852 points, 436 assists, 128 rebounds and 41 steals. With Zenit, the guard became a bronze medalist in the VTB United League and the Russian Championship, reached the EuroLeague quarterfinals and was named to the EuroLeague First Team. At the end of the season, Pangos was the team's top scorer and assist leader, averaging 13 points and 6.7 assists per game across all competitions.
After his time in St. Petersburg, Kevin played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. Returning to Europe, he first defended the colors of the Italian Olimpia, and a little later the Spanish Valencia, in a match with which he set his record. In the 2024/25 season, Pangos is once again playing in Italy, representing Napoli.
