Georgy Zhbanov: "Love for basketball is stronger than any pain"

June 24, 2026

St. Petersburg team's forward Georgy Zhbanov shared his emotions about the end of the season. In an interview with Zenit's media team, the player spoke about the support of the fans, his fighting spirit, and plans for the offseason.

— Georgy, during the playoffs you showed your fighting character more than once. What emotions did you carry into the final game of the season, given the injury you sustained during the series?

— Yes, I numbed it with painkillers and went out to play. In fact, love for basketball is stronger than any pain. I realized that if I could run, then I could play. Of course, it's frustrating that it all wasn't for nothing, exactly, but it just wasn't enough to win. It's very disappointing, and there's still a bit of a bitter aftertaste. But that's life. We lost this time — we'll do everything to win next time.

— This season, you confirmed your reputation as one of the best defensive players in the League. Both your individual award and your play on the court speak to that. You also set a new personal scoring record. Do you feel you've taken a step forward?

— If you look at the individual stats, then yes, of course. If you examine them in isolation, the season was better for me. But apparently, that's not enough to achieve real results — I need to work even harder. All of that is certainly nice, but I would trade the awards and records for a positive result in the season.

— Fans have long considered you one of the symbols of selfless play for Zenit. How important is that recognition to you?

— It is definitely very important when fans appreciate your effort and see how much you give. For my part, I just do it sincerely, from the heart. But if the fans also acknowledge it, that's doubly pleasing.

— How important is the support from the stands during the toughest moments of the season?

— As far as Zenit Basketball Club is concerned, I've noticed that it doesn't matter how the season is going — good or bad, whether it's a big game or not. Whether it's a top‑4 team or Samara or Avtodor coming to visit, the stands are still more or less full. That means people love basketball here, and they show support at every game. I'm incredibly happy to play in the atmosphere of the St. Petersburg club. I hope it continues that way.

— How do you plan to recover and rest this summer? And what else do you think you need to improve in your game?

— There's always something to improve (smiles). As for recovery: the doctors will give me all the instructions, lay out a summer plan, and I'll follow their guidance strictly.
