Vladislav Emchenko: "We need to play our basketball"
Zenit guard Vladislav Emchenko spoke about the team’s preparation for the away game of Round 28 of the VTB United League regular season against Uralmash. The matchup with the Yekaterinburg side will take place tomorrow, February 19, at the DIVS arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 17:30 St. Petersburg time.
— How did the preparation for the second game in a week against Uralmash go? Can it be described as working on mistakes?
— We analyze and work on mistakes after every game, but especially after losses. It’s a rather unusual situation to play two consecutive games against the same team, so all the time leading up to the second matchup was devoted to detailed analysis and preparation for the opponent. In the previous game, we failed to stick to the game plan and stay focused throughout. We didn’t look like ourselves either on defense or offense. Uralmash deserved the win. But I’m glad there’s always another game to show — and to prove to ourselves — that the last one was just an exception. We’re ready for the game; we need to step onto the court and play our basketball, proving every second that we deserve the victory. Together, for one another — and then everything will work out.
— What factors will be key to winning tomorrow’s game?
— First of all, our defense. I believe we performed at not even half of our potential defensively. From the very first seconds, we need to set the tone with aggressive defense and quick transition offense. On offense, we must play with confidence, move the ball, create scoring opportunities, and be active on the boards. We’re capable of doing all of that — we just need to stay consistent in these aspects from start to finish.
— Does playing away add extra motivation? After all, getting revenge on the opponent’s court is especially satisfying.
— I don’t think that’s something crucial to focus on. It’s simply a huge desire to win. The chance to bounce back after a home loss, a feeling of unfinished business — all of that should motivate us, fire us up competitively, and give us extra energy. The key is to turn that energy into efficiency and results.
Even though we’re playing on the road, we’ll still feel the support of our fans and our families. That will push us forward. I’m sure some people will come to support us in Yekaterinburg, and others will be watching on TV. We truly appreciate it.
