Georgy Zhbanov: "Glad I managed to set a new career high"
Blue-whites guard Georgy Zhbanov shared his thoughts with Zenit TV following the home game against Samara (115:57). In this match, he scored 20 points with perfect shooting accuracy — 100% field goals (4/4 three-pointers, 4/4 two-pointers). In our interview, player talked about his new scoring record, post-victory gifts and the upcoming game in Krasnodar.
— Georgy, congratulations on the win! How would you assess today's result?
— Very positively. We prepared well, approached the game responsibly and deserved the victory. This was one of the steps in our preparation for the big game ahead in Krasnodar.
— Before the game, you kissed your wife when she was congratulating all women on the upcoming International Women's Day. Was that planned, or was it spontaneous?
— No, I didn’t know she would be there. I saw her on the screen and noticed she was a little nervous. I thought: I’ll run over, support her, give her a kiss. I think it helped her relax a little.
— You had a perfect game today: 8/8 from the field, including four three-pointers. On top of that, it’s your career-high in points. How do you feel?
— Well, I’m definitely happy to have set a new career high. The opportunity was there, and I took it. In the previous game, for example, it wasn’t, so we play according to the situation. Today, my teammates found me, and I couldn’t let them down.
— Everyone is aware of Samara’s current situation, but was there a goal to score 100 points today?
— No, that wasn’t the goal. The goal was to press all over the court. And as for Samara, I can only express my support — they’re in a tough spot. But there’s a silver lining: young players are getting valuable experience. I think playing at this level is priceless for them, and they’ll only get better.
— Overall, do you think the games against Samara and Astana helped you get back into rhythm after the February break?
— Definitely. Every opponent deserves respect and a serious approach. And after a break like that, having Astana and Samara as our first games helped us catch our breath, find our rhythm, and move forward toward our goal with renewed energy.
— Can you share what Alexander Ivanovich Medvedev said in the locker room after the game and what gifts the team received?
— What he said will stay in the locker room, I think. But he gifted us these amazing bomber jackets. He promised, and he delivered. We’re really happy. Huge thanks to him.
— A tough away game in Krasnodar is coming up. What does it take for the North to defeat the South?
— What does it take? Confidence in our game, belief in our victory and supporting each other on the court. I’m sure we can do it.
— International Women’s Day is just around the corner. What would you like to say to the ladies?
— Ladies, stay beautiful and radiant! (laughs) And to my beloved wife — I love her very much, and I couldn’t have done this without her support. I send my regards to my mother, sisters, and everyone. Big hugs to everyone! See you soon.
