Maxim is a product of the St. Petersburg basketball school and the Zenit system. He first joined it in 2016 and progressed through the Children Youth Basketball League (CYBL) and the youth team to reach the main roster.
Later, Karvanen went on loan to Saratov's Avtodor, and after leaving Zenit, he played for Nizhny Novgorod, Rusichi Kursk, Universitet Yugra from Surgut and Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
In February 2025, the forward returned to Zenit and joined the blue-whites' farm team.
