Sergey was born into a basketball family, with his father Vasily Karasev being a former head coach of Zenit. Sergey started playing basketball in Moscow, at Trinta, and in 2008, at the age of 15, he joined the system of Triumph. Within two seasons, Sergey started attracting attention and began playing with the main team. By the age of 17, he became the MVP of the round in the Russian PBL after a 34-point performance against Dynamo.
Sergey played for Triumph until 2013 when he entered the NBA Draft. He was selected as the 19th pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers and moved to the United States. He spent the season between the Cavaliers' main team and their G League affiliate. In the summer, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he played for two seasons.
In 2016, Sergey Karasev returned to Russia and signed a contract with Zenit. After three seasons, he moved to Khimki, however, after two years, he returned to St. Petersburg and is currently one of the top three players in terms of the number of games played in the history of the club.
