Alexander Shcherbenev: "We understand the full seriousness of the opponent"
Zenit guard Alexander Shcherbenev spoke ahead of the away game against Moscow’s CSKA about the team’s condition going into the clash with the leaders of the VTB United League. The Round 23 regular season match will take place tomorrow, January 24, at the Megasport Arena. Tip-off is at 16:00 St. Petersburg time.
— Have you managed to recover and prepare properly for the game against CSKA?
— Yes, we’ve managed to recover. Fortunately, both of our recent away games were in Moscow, so after the match against MBA we didn’t have to fly anywhere.
— What is the team’s mindset heading into the upcoming game?
— We’re approaching the game in a fighting mood and understand the full seriousness of the opponent. They have only two losses this season, if I’m not mistaken. On top of that, they are the reigning champions, so we’ll do everything possible to put up a fight and win.
— Has the change of head coach given the team an extra boost of energy?
— Of course. I think the arrival of a new head coach will give us energy. The main thing is to play for each other. We understand that there’s still a lot of work ahead, since the coach has changed and the system is a bit different. But it’s important that the energy and desire remain at a high level. Overall, we have a good roster, so we are capable of beating CSKA.
— What are CSKA’s main strengths?
— They very rarely lose at home. It’s a very well-coordinated team that has hardly changed since last year: a strong group of players and a strong coaching staff. Everyone understands what kind of game awaits tomorrow, is preparing for very tough, physical basketball, and will do everything to win.
