Ivan Vasiliev: "This is a great motivation for further growth"
Zenit U21 forward Ivan Vasiliev entered the symbolic top five of the VTB United Youth League in October.
Vasiliev participated in all eight games this month, with the team securing victory in seven. On average, the forward scored 12 points per game, alongside 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1 block.
Zenit’s press service spoke with Ivan about this achievement, the start of the season and his goals for the championship.
— What does being named to the October top five mean to you?
— For me, this is a joyful moment and a new incentive in the VTB Youth League. Getting into the top five adds confidence, and, of course, it is a great motivation for further growth. But I understand that it is impossible to stop there — there is a lot of work ahead.
— How do you evaluate your performances in October? Is there anything you’d like to improve?
— October was intense and challenging. There were both successful moments and areas where I need to work. I see that I still lack a bit in defense and aggression in rebounding, so right now I’m focusing on training to improve these aspects. I’ll try to show better results in the upcoming games.
— Zenit U21 won seven games at the start of the season. In your opinion, what are the key factors behind the team’s success this month?
— Our success is due to the fact that we play cohesively and aggressively, both in defense and offense. Every player on the team is focused on fighting and winning. This team mindset helps us maintain our pace and keep up the intensity.
— How important is the role of your teammates in your achievements?
— My teammates play a huge role, of course. Each one supports and helps me — if I make a mistake, they’re always there to point out what I need to improve. This team atmosphere gives me confidence and helps me perform better on the court.
— Do you have any specific goals for the upcoming games?
— The main goal is, of course, to win. But aside from that, I want to correct my mistakes and improve in defense and rebounding, as I mentioned. It’s important not just to step on the court but to see personal growth with every game.
— What does it mean to you to play for Zenit and represent the blue-whites colors?
— It’s a great honor for me to wear Zenit’s colors. I’m proud to represent the team and contribute to its success this season.
