Evgeny Kuznetsov: "You can see that Zenit coach is energised"

October 7, 2024

Russian hockey player and forward for St. Petersburg's SKA, Evgeny Kuznetsov, attended the home game of the blue-whites team against Loko (76:83) and shared his impressions of the arena's atmosphere. The Stanley Cup winner and two-time world champion talked about the similarities between Xavi Pascual and Roman Rotenberg. Read more in our interview with the Russian hockey star.

— Evgeny, we're glad to welcome you to basketball. Is this your first time at a Zenit game?

— Yes, it's my first time here. Thank you for the invitation. Given the timing — I'm injured and couldn't go on the trip. I live nearby, just 10 minutes away, so thank you to those who invited me here.

— Can you compare the atmosphere at the CSC Arena with that of the Washington Wizards' arena?

— To be honest, I was surprised by the full stands. I didn't expect that. Of course, there are usually a bit more people over there. But the atmosphere here is great, and there are a lot of kids in the stands, which is nice to see.

— Do you think there’s something that unites the basketball team, the football team, and SKA hockey in St. Petersburg? Maybe the atmosphere?

— Definitely the fans. You can tell that people here love sports and try to support them. I find it very surprising to see full stands. It's a thrill for athletes when people gather, come to cheer, and no one sits quietly — everyone's making noise, which is great.

— You've also been to a Zenit football game. What are your impressions of the three sports venues in St. Petersburg—hockey, basketball and football?

— Yes, I went to a Zenit game once, for the cup. I was in the stands, and it was cool that no one recognized me. It was calm, I could just sit there without anyone coming over. I would like to see the full Gazprom Arena someday. It's a crazy stadium, and the fans were interesting to listen to as well. Football is always known for raising your spirits just by being there and listening for a bit.

— Be honest, Evgeny, do people often recognize you in St. Petersburg? Ask for photos or autographs?

— No, it's generally pretty relaxed. I think that’s why I enjoy walking around the city. People don't recognize me much or ask for photos or autographs.

— If it's not a secret, why did you choose St. Petersburg to continue your career?

— That's a secret (laughs).

— Are there any Zenit basketball players you've noticed? Who do you think is a leader?

— I’ve seen Karasev before. He tried the NBA, played well. You can see that coach is energised. I like watching Xavi and how he behaves during the game. It says a lot about how the team will perform when you have a solid, confident coach. I like the way Pascual conducts himself.

— Do you see any similarities between Xavi and Roman Borisovich?

— Yes, they’re both driven to win and have strong characters. They fight for the team every moment, and players feel it when the coach is fighting for you.

— What would you like to wish Zenit fans?

— Ah, I already did — cheaper tickets and beer back in the stands (laughs).

— When can we expect you back on the ice?

— Whenever the doctors clear me. My job is to play hockey. As a player, you always want to get back faster, but there are doctors who decide, and it's their responsibility. I try to listen and, maybe, get back a bit earlier than planned. But, on the other hand, you need to trust those you work with, and I’m used to trusting the team doctors.

— We know sports are about records. Zenit recently set a season record by winning at home with a +44 point difference. Your former Washington teammate needs to score around 42 more goals to reach a similar milestone. When do you think he’ll get there?

— The sooner, the better, so he can finish it and enjoy life peacefully. He has family and kids. Let the old guy hit that mark, and we’ll all applaud together and celebrate.

— Bring your friends to basketball!

— Definitely, if the schedule aligns, I’d be happy to. There’s a great atmosphere and good people here. A full stadium is always a pleasure to come and watch.
