Andrey Martyuk on Zenit’s first playoff win
Zenit center Andrey Martiuk answered journalists' questions after a home win over Uralmash. The second game of the VTB United League quarterfinal against the team from Yekaterinburg ended with a score of 92:64 in favor of the Blue-White-Sky Blues.
— Congratulations on the win! The team had a strong start. What helped you build that early lead?
— Thank you. First of all, I want to congratulate our fans — it’s the start of the playoffs. I think it all comes down to team play, really aggressive defense, and when we find our rhythm, run the floor, and move the ball, we can beat anyone.
— When did you get the black eye — during the game or after?
— It happened the day before yesterday. It was a strange situation — maybe I ran into someone by accident, or maybe someone made sure I did.
— It seemed like you battled much harder on both boards today compared to the last game. What was behind that?
— I’d say it was more of an internal challenge for us. Every athlete has an ego — a healthy ego. And when the opponent plays a bit dirty, you can’t let that slide. Same with my black eye — maybe it was accidental, maybe not.
— The series now moves to Yekaterinburg. What are your expectations for the road games?
— It’s going to be tough and very physical. I think there will be more fighting than basketball.
