Timofey Vashchenko: "A lot of work was done during the preseason"
Zenit U21 forward Timofey Vashchenko was named to the symbolic five of the VTB United Youth League in October.
The player took part in all ten games of the month, nine of which the team won. On average, the forward recorded 10.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game.
In an interview with the club’s media team, Timofey shared his impressions of the season’s start.
— This is your second time being selected to the Youth League’s symbolic five of the month. How do you feel about it?
— Of course, I’m very happy. I found out unexpectedly, and it’s always nice to see yourself among the best.
— In October, Zenit U21 won 9 out of 10 games. How do you evaluate the start of the season, and what do you think led to such a successful run?
— We started the season quite well, though honestly, only we ourselves kept us from winning that tenth game. I think a lot of hard work was done during the preseason. Everyone — both the players and the coaching staff — is highly motivated.
— How would you assess your individual performance at the start of the season?
— It’s probably not for me to judge my own game. I’m grateful for the trust from my teammates and the coaching staff. This success is very much theirs as well!
— Probably the toughest test for the team last month was the home series against MBA-MAI-Junior. What can you say about facing the reigning champions?
— Speaking about the series with MBA, I can say one thing — they’re a strong opponent with their own style and leaders. But I believe that, in any case, nothing but our own lack of concentration kept us from winning that second game.
— In November, you’ll have eight games — four at home and four on the road. What’s your mindset ahead of the upcoming home games against Nizhny and UNICS in St. Petersburg?
— We’re ready for battle. After the road trip, where we only had nine players, several guys have recovered. Plus, a few players from the children's youth team have joined us. Now we have a full roster, and we’re preparing for the games with maximum effort!
