Before joining Zenit, Joan Plaza had become a highly respected coach in his homeland of Spain and a fan favorite in Kaunas. The coach won the Eurocup twice and secured the Lithuanian championship — in a season for which he never received payment. Plaza was named Coach of the Year both in Spain and Lithuania, and in 2019, he came to Zenit—initially for the remainder of the 2018/19 season, and then for a significant part of the following campaign.
