Georgy Zhbanov started playing basketball at the age of 10, having previously been involved in ballroom dancing. Initially, he joined a basketball section in his home city Yekaterinburg, but at the age of 13, he moved to Vidnoe and enrolled in the Spartak sports school. Later, in 2013, Zhbanov found himself in the structure of Moscow's Dynamo, specifically Dynamo-UOR-2. When the team was disbanded due to financial problems, Zhbanov chose the youth team of Nizhny Novgorod, although at that time the academies of Khimki and UNICS were already interested in the future Zenit BC guard.
In Nizhny Novgorod, Zhbanov not only made it to the main squad but also assumed leadership positions. As a result, the player ended up at UNICS Kazan, where he spent three seasons and won the championship in the United League and the Russian championship.
