Against Libya, the guard tallied 15 points, six assists, one steal and one block. Following the game, Alexander was named the MVP of the match.
Two days earlier, Russia’s main team secured a victory against Tunisia with a score of 81:73. Shcherbenev played over 14 minutes, contributing 9 points, 5 assists and 1 rebound. After confidently making a free throw to tie the game and push it into overtime, Alexander hit a critical three-pointer during the extra period, paving the way for Russia's win.
Zenit-2 forward Mikhail Dulkay, who was part of the National Team’s training camp, did not participate in the tournament.
Alexander Scherbenev summarised the results of the completed ‘Friendship Cup’ and shared his emotions after the victory:
It feels great to win so confidently and claim the cup with such a margin. After a lackluster first game, we wanted to redeem ourselves, and we did it. I’m happy I was able to help the team and earn the MVP award. This tournament provided us with valuable experience, and I’m sure all the guys feel the same. This is the second Friendship Cup we’ve won this season. I’m returning to Zenit on a high note, and we’ll continue to focus on the championship. Playing for the national team is always a pleasure, especially with games like these. In the current circumstances, it’s challenging to find opponents, but I’m confident the Basketball Federation is doing its best with what’s available. For us, this is a great opportunity to compete and connect with each other.
Zenit Basketball Club congratulates Alexander and Mikhail on their victory and wishes them continued success with the national team!
